The Upper Peninsula is uniquely beautiful, and the term “Yooper” is synonymous with kind, capable, and resilient.
However, in a region of small towns, verdant forests, and pristine waterways, accessing health care specialists, especially
behavioral health care, can be a serious challenge. Whether it’s themselves, a loved one, or a member of their
community, no community is unaffected by behavioral health needs, like depression, substance use disorder, or anxiety.
Even the fiercely self-reliant families of the UP have come to understand how important behavioral health services are,
and sadly, have experienced the devastating consequences of extended wait times, frequent provider changes, and long-
distance travel that can delay or even prevent them from getting, often, life-saving care.
The partners of the Upper Peninsula Health Care Solutions Behavioral Health Network came together to improve the lives
of people living in the UP by developing region-wide solutions to the care access issues affecting their health and
happiness. Our shared mission is to implement initiatives that: help primary care clinics manage behavioral health
conditions, allow for better access to specialty mental health care for those who need it, and create smooth transitions
between care settings. As our partnership expands and develops, we remain focused on creating a system in which any
Yooper, anywhere in the UP, can get the care they need, where they need it, and when they are ready for it. This work is
critical so that our communities, known for supporting one another, can continue to share and enjoy the natural splendor
of our home for generations to come.
The UPHCS Behavioral Health Network envisions a behavioral health system in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in which patients can easily access appropriate care that is affordable, convenient to them, and available when they need it.
The network’s mission is to improve behavioral health care in the region by implementing
initiatives that help primary care clinics manage behavioral health conditions, allow for better
access to specialty mental health care, and create processes that effectively identify patient
needs and facilitate smooth transitions between care settings as patient needs evolve.
