Frequently Asked Questions
Behavioral Health Integration (BHI)
What is Behavioral Health Integration (BHI)
Behavioral Health Integration brings mental health and substance use disorder services into the primary care settings. It helps providers deliver whole-person care by embedding behavioral health supports within routine medical care.
Why is BHI important
Integrating behavioral health improves access, reduces stigma, and enhances outcomes for patients by addressing both physical and mental health needs in one coordinated setting.
How does UPHCS support Behavioral Health Integration
UPHCS provides resources, training, and consultative support to help clinics implement evidence-based models like the Collaborative Care Model and connect with psychiatric expertise through the UPHCS Behavioral Health Collaborative and Hub.

The Collaborative Care Model (CoCM)
What is the Collaborative Care Model (CoCM)
The Collaborative Care Model is an evidence-based approach where a primary care provider, behavioral health care manager, and consulting psychiatrist work together as a team to manage patients’ behavioral health needs.
How does CoCM work in practice
The care manager supports patients directly, tracks progress using validated tools, and consults regularly with a psychiatric provider who advises the primary care team on treatment adjustments.
What are the benefits of CoCM
CoCM leads to better outcomes for depression, anxiety, and other conditions, improves provider confidence, and allows for more efficient use of psychiatric resources through indirect consultation.
